AM3+ lives on, no PCI-Express 3.0

According to a report over at Donanimhaber, it looks like AM3+ will live on well into 2012 and get some updates with the 1090FX and 1070 chipsets.

Both of the new chipsets will feature support for current FX-Series processors as well as any other AM3+ chips and will be paired up with the SB1060 southbridge. The new chipsets will birng additional SATA 6.0Gbps ports. To be precise, the 1090FX chipset will feature up to eight SATA 6.0Gbps ports, native USB 3.0 support as well as dual PCI-Exprees x16 configuration, while the 1070 chipset update will only be eight SATA 6.0Gbps ports.

The good part of the story is that AMD plans to keep the AM3+ socket alive for a few more quarters and it will coexist with the FM2 platform, aimed at the mainstream market. The bad part of the story is that AMD has no plans to go for the PCI-Express 3.0 interface, at least not with these two AM3+ updates.

The precise date hasn't been announced but we'll certainly keep an eye out for any rumors regarding these two. You can check out the slide over at Donanimhaber.
