TSMC expects speedy 28nm ramp

Ships more wafers than expected


TSMC seems to be doing quite well with its 28nm ramp and the company expects the new technology to account for 10 percent of its revenue in the second half of the year.

In Q4 2011, 28nm production contributed 2 percent of TSMC’s revenues and the company claims the transition is ahead of schedule, so 28nm products should account for 5 percent of the revenue in Q1 2012.

CEO Morris Chang claims the transition is going better than the transition to 40nm/45nm at corresponding stages of the ramp-up. The majority of high performance chips churned out by TSMC is still in 65nm/55nm, with 30 percent, while the 40nm process accounts for 27 percent of total revenues.
