Three months late Sandy Bridge-E CPU
Although Intel's socket 2011 platform and Core i7-3930K and i7-3960X CPUs based on the flagship Sandy Bridge-E core have been around for three months, but Intel has just added a third SKU to its official price list, the Core i7-3820 CPU.
Based on the 32nm Sandy Bridge-E core, the quad-core Core i7-3820 packs 256KB of L2 cache per core, 10MB of shared L3 cache and works at 3.6GHz base clock that goes up to 3.9GHz with Turbo Boost. The feature list includes all the goodies that you expect from Sandy Bridge architecture including the aforementioned Turbo Boost Technology 2.0, as well as Hyper-Threading, quad-channel memory controller but lacks those business-oriented technologies like VT-d virtualization and Trusted Execution. The TDP of the Core i7-3820 is set at 130W.
The good side of the sotry is that the Core i7-3820 is priced at US $294, which is much lower than what Intel ask for its six-core Sandy Bridge-E brethren. Some system integrators, like iBuyPower, have already start to offer the new Core i7-3820 in its lineup and the CPU has been spotted in some retail/e-tail shops including Overclockers.co.uk.
