Apple tops the charts yet again
Smartphone sales in the fourth quarter of 2011 continued to soar, hitting 149 million units, up 47 percent year-on-year according to Gartner.
Total smartphone sales in 2011 reached a staggering 472 million units and accounted for 31 percent of total mobile device sales. The strong results were fueled by the success of Apple’s iPhone 4S, making the Cupertino based company the third largest mobile phone vendor in the world. However, in strictly looking at the smartphone market, Apple is king with a 23.8 percent market share.
Samsung also did well in 2011 and it gained quite a bit of ground on Nokia in overall phone sales. Samsung ended the year with a 19.4 percent share, while Nokia’s share dropped to 23.4 percent, down from 27 percent in Q4 2010. Samsung did even better in the smartphone market, but Nokia is fighting back with its new range of Lumia phones.
Overall phone sales in Q4 2011 hit 476 million units, with smartphones accounting for 31 percent of all sales. Motorola, HTC, RIM, LG, Huawei and ZTE all shipped more than 10 million units in Q4 2011 and some vendors such as HTC and RIM churned out solely smartphones.
