First Toshiba Tegra 4 tablets shipping

Written by Fuad Abazovic

Toshiba Excite Pro and Excite Write

Toshiba’s Excite Pro and Toshiba Excite Write tablets are the first two devices to ship with Nvidia’s latest Tegra 4 SoC. Toshiba managed to beat Nvidia's onw Shield that was supposed to be the first Tegra 4 device to market, but right now Toshiba has two Tegra 4 based tablets shipping in US and EU markets.

The Toshiba Excite Pro has a high resolution 2560x1600 pixel display, 2 GB of memory and 32GB of storage. An 8-megapixel camera with LED flash is on the back, along with a 1.2-megapixel front face camera and Harman / Kardon stereo speakers.

It comes with a microSD slot, micro HDMI, 802.11ac Wifi, Bluetooth 4.0 and GPS and weighs 1.4 pounds (635 grams)and measures 0.4 inch (around 10mm) at the thickest point. It comes in silver with an official name Toshiba Excite Pro AT15LE-A32 PDA0EU-00101Y 10.1-Inch 32GB Tablet (Silver) and promises 9.5 hour battery life.

It is available at Amazon today at $500 here. It is also available in Europe, with prices starting at €424 in Holland. Although the market for high-end Android tablets is still limited, the Tosh looks like a pretty good deal, since it costs about as much as a Nexus 10, but features better hardware all around. A Toshiba Excite Write tablet is some $80 more expensive as it comes with an active digitizer pen and it should ship within some seven days in case you place your order today. You can get it here.

Sadly though, it is still not available in the EU, although it is listed all over the place.

There is also a cheaper version of this family named Toshiba Excite Pure that sells for $299/€299 and comes with a Tegra 3 processor, 10.1-inch 1280x800 display, micro HDMI, 1GB ram, 16GB of storage as well stereo speakers, 1.2 megapixel front facing camera, Bluetooth 4.0 and 802.11n WiFi. Although the hardware is a bit dated, it still looks like a decent mid-range product and Toshiba claims that the 25 W battery should be enough for 13.5 hours of run times despite the weight of just under 1.4 ponds. It is listed here.
